Terry Royal went into corrections in 1991 to help people. Today, after nearly a quarter century of working in prisons across the country, he is warden of Oklahoma’s most well-known prison – Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. The prison, simply put, houses the worst of the worst in the state. There are 751 inmates here, most of them with notoriously violent histories, confined in small concrete cells where they spend 23 hours a day on lockdown, with an hour a day in a confined cage for recreation.
